Reading manager Jaap Stam is not a happy man with the Leeds faithful. Following his sides loss to Leeds on Tuesday night the former Manchester United hard man had this to say about his visit to Elland Road after Leeds fans chanted ‘boring boring Reading’ –
“You can tell something about how they are as human beings to be fair,” adding “It’s a way of thinking. Because if you think that this is boring I think they need to have a look at their own team and how they play.”
He went on to say; “They can say ‘we won’ and of course at the end it’s about the result – but if you need to play like that then I don’t want to be a manager. Because I don’t want to play and just wait and wait and wait. That’s not my type of playing, my type of tactics.
“You can say congratulations to Garry Monk, he got the result and everyone wants results. But in terms of way of playing, it’s not my cup of tea.”
Harsh words indeed but the rant comes after Reading enjoyed 77% of the position but spent large amounts of time playing the ball across their back four with Leeds launching swift counter attacks which in the end proved pivotal with four shoots on target to Readings two.
Garry Monk enjoyed the last word however as Chris Wood’s first half strike coupled with a late Doukara Penalty ensured Leeds enjoyed their sixth win in eight games to keep the Whites firmly in the play-off positions and perhaps contributed to Stam’s annoyance at the home fans chants.
The defeat for Reading leaves them still in third in the table but only two points ahead of Leeds and nine behind pace setters Newcastle United who beat Wigan 2-0 on Wednesday night to retain top spot.
Up next for Leeds is a home tie against 14th placed Brentford before a trip to face former manager Simon Grayson’s impressive Preston North End on boxing day which could see Leeds cement their play-off credentials.
