The Action

Leeds put their cup humiliation behind them and continued their fine league form with a hard-fought win over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park last night.

The game entered the break finely poised at 0-0 with neither side really grasping the game by the scruff of the neck.

The game came alive in the second half and in the 74th minute Whites captain Liam Bridcutt set winger Stuart Dallas up at the back post to slot home his first of the campaign.

Leeds held the lead for only nine minutes when Elliot Bennetts 20-yard strike struck a bobble in the pitch which wrong footed Rob Green to level the scores.

However, Leeds hero Pontus Jansson once again rose to the occasion as he converted an 89th minute header to send Leeds home victorious.

The win for Leeds leaves them just five points behind Newcastle in second whilst Blackburn fell deeper into relegation mire and sit 23rd in the Championship three points adrift of safety.

What the Managers Said: –

Owen Coyle – Blackburn Rovers

“We certainly put enough into game to be taking something. Certainly, a minimum of a point and probably with a bit of luck, maybe all three.

“There’s no doubt it’s very galling, disappointing, but those are the margins in this league and if you’re going to switch off for any given moment in the Championship, you’re going to get punished.”

Garry Monk – Leeds United

“It wasn’t pretty by any stretch of the imagination. Neither team got control of anything. (It was) a bit to and fro, a bit of a grind.

“We defended our box very well, stayed strong when it was difficult and in those crucial moments we scored two good goals. Yes (we were) a bit lucky to come away with the three points but the mentality and character is what I was pleased with.”
